<\/p>\nI am in many beauty groups on Facebook and the other day there was an interesting discussion in the comments field when a girl asked what people thought about becoming a self-taught makeup artist or makeup training.<\/p>\n
There were incredibly mixed opinions, but few answers that helped the girl who asked as most of the respondents had been educated and actually had no experience of being self-taught.<\/p>\n
Eftersom jag sj\u00e4lv g\u00e5r under termen “sj\u00e4lvl\u00e4rd makeupartist” s\u00e5 t\u00e4nkte jag d\u00e4rf\u00f6r skriva ett inl\u00e4gg om det eftersom intresset verkar stort! :)<\/p>\n

I tr\u00e5den om detta s\u00e5 l\u00e4ste jag m\u00e5nga kommentarer i stil med “du kan jobba med att sminka folk men du kan inte kalla dig makeupartist om du inte har utbildning”.<\/p>\n
My opinion is:<\/p>\n
1. To call yourself a makeup artist, it is required that you have the knowledge that a makeup artist needs. It is not enough to be able to do a nice make-up on yourself and your best friend, but you need to know different skin types, color theory, techniques, different types of make-up, different products and tools etc. And it is not enough to possess the knowledge but you must be able to perform this on different people as well - regardless of who ends up in the make-up chair and what wishes that particular person has. It is plenty<\/em> (!) one must know both theoretically and practically.<\/p>\n 2. If you have learned all of the above, I think you have an education regardless of whether you are self-taught or if you paid SEK 70,000 to get a teacher, the only difference is from where<\/em> you have received the information.<\/p>\n In my opinion, then all<\/em> sj\u00e4lvl\u00e4rda makeupartister ocks\u00e5 utbildade f\u00f6rutsatt att dom uppfyller kriterierna f\u00f6r att kalla sig makeupartist! Sen h\u00e5ller jag 100% med om att man inte kan kalla sig makeupartist om man \u00e4r pissd\u00e5lig, men det g\u00e4ller b\u00e5de utbildade och sj\u00e4lvl\u00e4rda. Vissa utbildningar har h\u00e5rda kunskapskrav f\u00f6r att bli certifierad medan andra “s\u00e4ljer diplom”.<\/p>\n 3. If anything, I think all makeup artists are self-taught! Of course you need all the information and knowledge, but in the end it is practice, practice, practice that decides whether you become good or not. Experience and burning interest weigh the most!<\/p>\n With that said, it's not necessarily the case that I advocate becoming a self-taught makeup artist. For me, it suited me well when I started already in high school, so when I took the student I already knew so much that I got a job anyway - then it felt superfluous to spend as much time and money as it takes to go to a proper education. I absolutely did not have that finances!<\/p>\n But there are three really strong benefits to education:<\/p>\n 1. Products and materials are included in the price. It's not free to be self-taught either, because you need to buy all the products and tools yourself - and we all know that it's not free.<\/p>\n 2. It's faster! Getting direct feedback from a teacher and discussing with other students makes you become good much faster. In addition, it is very time consuming to search for all this information yourself, in an education you get it served on a silver platter.<\/p>\n If you want to work in TV, theater, etc., it is probably smarter with an education. There you learn make-up for different lighting, older people, masking such as latex and fake blood etc. I can not do that :) but I do not need it either as I work with salons, private individuals, product sales and the photography and film jobs I do are common beauty makeup.<\/p>\n I can not comment on what it is like to go to an education because I have not done so, but I have quite a lot of insight into it anyway because I have had many trainees and colleagues who are educated and been a substitute in a makeup education and saw those students (who were almost fully trained) and what level their knowledge was at.<\/p>\n In other words: I probably have more insight into what it is like to be a trained makeup artist, than what a trained makeup artist has insight into what it is like to be a self-taught makeup artist.<\/p>\n Det finns mycket f\u00f6rdomar om vad en sj\u00e4lvl\u00e4rd makeupartist \u00e4r. Att det \u00e4r n\u00e5gon som “gillar smink och har tittat mycket p\u00e5 Youtube”. Jag sj\u00e4lv hade tv\u00e4rtom litat mer p\u00e5 en person som \u00e4r sj\u00e4lvl\u00e4rd – om den \u00e4r duktig – f\u00f6r d\u00e5 har man verkligen k\u00e4mpat! Becoming a self-taught makeup artist is not the easy way out.<\/strong><\/p>\n To be completely honest, I think that a large part of the prejudices are based on the fact that it catches the eye of people who have completed an education and then people without education appear who compete. Of course it's not fun :)<\/p>\n But becoming self-taught is not just disadvantages either. I am very happy that I am self-taught!<\/p>\n 1. Detta g\u00e4ller inte alla utbildade s\u00e5klart men jag har ofta m\u00e4rkt att jag har ett mer \u00f6ppet sinne n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller makeup och regler. Det blir l\u00e4tt att man g\u00f6r och t\u00e4nker “som sin l\u00e4rare visade” ist\u00e4llet f\u00f6r att t\u00e4nka sj\u00e4lv. Lite som i verkliga livet – det \u00e4r skillnad p\u00e5 att vara “street smart” och att vara “book smart”.<\/p>\n 2. Man blir otroligt bra p\u00e5 probleml\u00f6sningar. N\u00e4r man inte f\u00e5r l\u00e4ra sig “r\u00e4tt” direkt utan kommer fram till saker sj\u00e4lv s\u00e5 hittar man egna knep och tips. N\u00e4r jag g\u00f6r sminkkonsultationer (som \u00e4r v\u00e4ldigt uppskattade) s\u00e5 \u00e4r det vissa tips jag ger ut som jag inte h\u00f6rt n\u00e5gon annan s\u00e4ga utan det \u00e4r helt mina egna.<\/p>\n 3. N\u00e4r man \u00e4r sin egen l\u00e4rare s\u00e5 vet man att man har en bra l\u00e4rare. Haha. Missf\u00f6rst\u00e5 mig r\u00e4tt – men det finns olika utbildningar och vissa l\u00e4rare \u00e4r GRYMMA allts\u00e5 guld v\u00e4rda! Men det finns ocks\u00e5 dom som l\u00e4r ut 80-talsregler s\u00e5 som “syntet till klet” allts\u00e5 att man har borstar med \u00e4kta h\u00e5r till torra puderprodukter och syntetpenslar till kr\u00e4mprodukter. Jaa visst s\u00e5 var det f\u00f6rut n\u00e4r alla syntetborstar var som sm\u00e5 m\u00e5larpenslar, men nu fungerar syntetborstar till allt! Det \u00e4r en vattendelare men enligt mig finns det ingen anledning n\u00e5gonsin att anv\u00e4nda borstar med \u00e4kta h\u00e5r.<\/p>\n What is best? To be a self-taught makeup artist or a trained makeup artist?<\/p>\n That said, a makeup artist is a makeup artist (in my opinion) no matter how you get there. It is not the journey that is the point but the goal.<\/p>\n What is better or worse is 100% individually. You have to weigh the pros and cons and look at your own life situation, conditions and personality! Being self-taught is certainly not for everyone, it requires self-discipline and geekiness, but if it works best for you<\/em> so it's the right way to go.<\/p>\n I actually see a need for simpler makeup training on the market. I am really eager to do a well-crafted web training - a makeup training at a distance for future makeup artists!<\/p>\n Why? Because I see a big gap today between 1. really sharp makeup artists who know everything from crazy fashion make-up to masking and special effects. Or 2. semi-interested people who have gotten jobs at various store chains and who regularly sell foundations with the wrong color.<\/p>\n Where is everyone in between? We need talented makeup artists who want to work in a make-up shop, beauty salon, sales, own company, freelance, weddings and other parties! Those who do not spend 70,000 on a makeup education that takes a whole year, but who still need a large part of that knowledge.<\/p>\n Giving product advice to 20 people a day is not easy without knowledge, I can promise you :) Just choosing a suitable face primer requires several follow-up questions about skin type, wishes for results, which products to use over, etc.<\/p>\n Oj vad sugen jag blev p\u00e5 att g\u00f6ra en riktigt v\u00e4larbetad makeuputbildning online nu! En som \u00e4r perfekt f\u00f6r alla “mellanting-personer” haha!
